Ruben Gonzalez was one of the last of Cuba's great Afro-Cuban piano players.
Although he briefly attended medical school, hoping to become a doctor, the lure of music proved unsurmountable. Leaving school, Gonzalez moved to Havana to become a full-time musician in 1941.

The indisputable father of what is known today as Latin Jazz, Mario Bauza recorded "Afro-Cuban Jazz" in 1986, reuniting some of the greatest figures of this genre. This incredible release contains the tracks “Hasta Siempre”
and “La Canción de los Niños”, originally
included in the Paquito’s extremely rare LP “En
Finlandia,” a limited edition album, published 25 years
ago for the Cuban label Areito. Both tracks along with the
first three that appear on the reference YY 9423 Paquito D’Rivera
“The Lost Sessions”, complete this mythic LP (see
picture).
Also appearing are hot recordings featuring
his dream band and fabulous horn section. Among its original
members are Chucho Valdés (piano), Arturo Sandoval
(trumpet), Carlos Averhoff (sax), Carlos Emilio Morales (guitar),
and Enrique Plá (drums).
All of the tracks were recorded in Havana
and Finland between 1976 and 1978, before Rivera permanently
relocated to the U.S.A. in 1979.

This new Valdés CD is the incredible debut album of the
new Yemayá label. Here we find his contribution to the
fusion of Cuban music and jazz. This selection, that appears
for the first time on CD, includes a variety of themes from
the Cuban repertory. Chucho has been Irakere’s musical
director, recording with small groups, and also as a solo pianist.
Here he recorded in Havana with his trio featuring the extraordinary
Buena Vista Social Club’s Orlando “Cachaito”
Lopez (bass) and Enrique Pla (drums). He also recorded in a
Quartet that includes José Luís Cortés
(flute), German Velazco (flute) and Carlos del Puerto (bass).
All of these recordings are interpretations of either anthology
pieces from the Cuban songs of the 50’s, danceable music,
universal compositions or Cuban Classics.

danceable music with a rhythmic jazz base; the tumbaos, the
organ and the refrains, that give it its own unique flavor.
